In 2014, Giulia Negri, the "Barolo Girl,” took over her family estate at the age of 24. Armed with experiences in Burgundy and elsewhere, she was up to the task to continue the 150-year lineage that her grape growing family has in the region. Thanks to cooler vineyard spots and her deft touch, these are fiercely elegant expressions of Nebbiolo.
Don't expect a lot of extraction or tannin here. If you love elegant Burgundies from Volnay or Santennay, these are Barolos for you! Giulia’s commitment to low-fi certified organic winemaking is palpable.
Her Barolo Serradenari is a wine of serious, meditative pedigree. The combo package of elevation plus a diverse range of soils, a mosaic, if you will, yields a wine with fine grained tannins, soaring aromatics, and a texture that could leave you thinking there is satin on your palate.
Her "La Tartufai" Barolo, named after the truffle fields Giulia's grandfather planted on the property before her father replaced them with vineyards, is her most delicate and airy Barolo—it's a wine so ethereal and intensely aromatic (truffles?) that you may just be transported to the gentle hills of Piedmont. The sun is setting, the autumn air brisk, braised meat is doing its thing on the stove and whiffs of smoke from the chimney abound—yes, if you are open to imagination, wine can be a portal into the beautiful.
Lastly, Giulia's entry level Langhe Nebbiolo, "Pian delle Mole,” is a breathtaking wine of supreme elegance, purity and insane quality to price ratio. For those wanting a snapshot into the precocious talent without the heavy price tag, start here. If it were me, I would buy a case of this charm puppy and call it a pantry staple.
