Aligoté, a historic and often maligned Burgundian grape variety, is currently enjoying the spotlight. Historically, Aligoté was planted in some of the great terroirs of Burgundy yielding some very intriguing versions of white Burgundy, and then at some point about half way through the 20th century, the grape was over farmed, doused with petrochemicals, and treated with minimal care to be added with some cassis.
Thankfully, a handful of thoughtful producers recognized that with care, Aligoté can yield a unique interpretation of Burgundian terroir. So, what's the difference between Aligoté and Chardonnay? Simply, we feel that Aligoté has more edge, more cut, more acid than Chardonnay. In an era when things are heating up and the prime vineyards of the past are no longer as ideal, Aligoté offers a new possibility for more balanced and harmonious wines.
